Mary M. Bethune PreK–8 students received a special treat Tuesday when many participated in a gym takeover thanks to the Cleveland Browns Foundation.
Many of these students earned this reward because they registered great attendance right before the winter break.
“You all worked so hard to get to school,” commended Melanie A Nakonachny, Mary Bethune Principal. “It was cold and snowy that week and you showed up.”
During the Browns Gym takeover, students participated in several football drills, including catching the ball and flag football drills.
A representative from Meijer Fairfax Market, a grocery store scheduled to open near Cleveland Clinic on E 105th, also announced during the event they were donating $5,000 to CMSD’s Project Act.
Project ACT, CMSD’s Homeless Children and Youth program, serves roughly 1,687 students in PreK-12th grade experiencing homelessness.
Marcia Zashin, with Project Act, says the donations will be used to provide emergency food assistance to our homeless student population.
“One of the things we have found is the students our life skills coaches work with are always hungry,” said Zashin. “Now we can make sure they have something to eat.”
The Cleveland Browns matched the $5,000 donation initially announced by Meijer. That money will be used to support youth football engagement as well as other physical education needs.
